Bhaktivedanta Swami Mission School

SPIRITUAL

Our School-A School with a Difference

Along with academics, our school offers a very special opportunity to the students and teachers – to move ahead in the spiritual path of life. Spiritual activities conducted in our school are as follows:

The deity installation anniversary celebration where in, a grand Abhishek is arranged for Their Lordships Sri Sri Jagannath, Baldev and Subhadraji. It is followed by a lecture and prasadam for all.

Snana Yatra for the deities is organised as a festival for Lord Jagannath. He is placed on the Snana Vedi (bathing platform) along with Lord Baladev and Subhadraji. It is considered to be the birthday of Jagannathji. It is called Jaladhibasa (Jala-water ; Abhishek-bath)

Gundicha Marjanam - With the help of this pastime, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu teaches us to cleanse our hearts of all the contamination.
Gundicha temple in Puri (Odisha) is the one where Lord Jagannath would stay after the Rath Yatra. So it is swept by the devotees to invite Lord Krishna to come and dwell in their hearts.
Similarly, the school children clean the temple and the school premise with great enthusiasm.

Rath Yatra – The Cart Festival which is one of the most awaited celebrations amongst the teachers and students. It is celebrated with all participating in the procession of pulling a chariot of Lord Jagannathji, Lord Baldevji and Subhadra Maiyya to seek their blessings
The story behind this goes as follows - When the summer heat becomes extreme, Lordships Jagannathji, Baldevji & Subhadra Maiyya step out to bathe, that is the day of Snana Purnima. After this they fall ill and are treated with herbal medicines. Soon as they recover, they desire to visit their aunt (masi) Gundicha. Thus they step on to their grand chariots for their stay at aunt’s house.

Guru Purnima - dedicated to Srila Prabhupada and celebrated as the appearance day of Srila Vyasadeva. The students organise spiritual plays and songs to express their gratitude towards all their teachers.

Jhulan Yatra is also known as the swing festival of Sri Sri Radha Krishna. The deities are decorated beautifully and placed on a swing. Each child swings the Lord gently and they offer their obeisances.

Janmasthami, marking the appearance day of Lord Krishna is celebrated by breaking the butter pot. The students of class X participate whole heartedly and break the pot of butter with great excitement. Each child of the school brings any one of the items like milk, curd, honey, ghee or Ganga jal that are then mixed to form panchamrita which is then used to perform Abhishek of Sri Radha Krishna.

Srila Prabhupada Appearance day also known as Nandotsava is celebrated by offering flowers to Srila Prabhupada (Pushpanjali), cooking for him, reading his books and appreciating his contribution towards ISKCON.

Radhashtami, the appearance day of Srimati Radharani is observed by engaging the students in some devotional activities like garland making, rangoli designing, making flower dresses, colouring and remembering Her pastimes.

Govardhan Puja / Community Feast, the much awaited occasion of the year has its own mood and significance. The students bring their offering for Govardhan, perform kirtan, circumambulate (parikrama) Him and worship Him with complete devotion.
It marks the defeat of Lord Indra by Lord Krishna. When Indra caused heavy rain and floods in Gokul as the people started worshipping Govardhan hill instead of Indra. To protect the inhabitants, Krishna lifted the hill on His little finger (of the left hand) and thus came to be known as ‘Govardhandhari’. This puja is done to seek the blessings of Govardhan; the source of livelihood in Gokula.

Dipa Dana is also arranged whereby, the students offer lamps to Lord Damodar and sing Damodarashtakam.

Bhagavad Gita Marathon or Book Distribution program, the time when the teachers and the students make an attempt to distribute the Bhagavad Gitas and spread the message of Lord Krishna everywhere.
